Lith-M Fire Extinguishers

Vigil’s range of Lith-M Fire Extinguishers provides the cutting edge of modern fire protection. These extinguishers are designed specifically to combat the growing threat of lithium-ion battery fires, perhaps the most common fire hazard of the modern age.

The Threat of Lithium-Ion Battery Fires

Lithium-ion batteries power many, and in some cases, most of our everyday electronics. This includes phones, laptops, as well as other handheld and desktop devices, though the first two are prevalent enough to make this a major issue.

An incident involving this type of battery can create a dangerous fire cycle, involving thermal runaway and the overheated state of the battery. Thankfully, all reputable manufacturers, we hope, integrate a current interrupt device (CID) and positive temperature coefficient (PTC), two components that help reduce the risk of overheating. Unfortunately, the prevalence of these devices in our lives creates an ultimately unavoidable risk.

Lithium-ion batteries contain a flammable electrolyte, which can potentially cause a fire if over-pressurised or otherwise badly damaged. A lithium-ion battery fire could be caused by thermal, electrical or mechanical abuse to the device, or even an internal short circuit due to ageing or manufacturing flaws.

How Lith-M Extinguishers work

If you’ve read the section above, you might now be somewhat worried about lithium-ion battery fire. Well, that’s fine because our Lith-M extinguishers couldn’t be better suited to giving you peace of mind over these concerns.

These extinguishers are designed with both the fighting of Li-ion battery fires and the safe use of the extinguisher near said fires in mind. They are all rated for Class A and B fires as well as those caused by lithium-ion batteries, and made from materials rated for use near live electrical devices. They typically use a water-based extinguishant with foam additives, making them capable of effectively extinguishing any flames, while also controlling the re-ignition of cells inside the battery.

Our Lith-M extinguishers are designed for lithium-ion batteries with a minimum capacity of 750Wh, a rating that our heavier-duty options far exceed.
